Westport shuts down 15 liters of direct injection natural gas engine

Westport, Canada, recently shut down Westport's 15-boost direct-injection natural gas engine . A few years ago, the product was retrofitted from the Cummins ISX diesel engine. Dealers expressed disappointment at stopping this classic product.

Peca has informed North America's Kenworth and Peterbilt dealers according to Westport's decision. It is scheduled to terminate the 15-liter machine-driven Kenworth T800 and Peterbilt 367 trucks in August. The dealer said that the date could be slightly delayed but no longer accept orders. .

UPS was the earliest user of Westport LNG trucks . A driver from the company in Southern California stated that the model could not be compared with the newly-listed high-powered engines.

Another driver said that the 12.8 litre sparking engine of the West Coast Cummins ISX12G had basically met the demand for 400 horsepower roads.

There are also other sources that Cummins is planning to develop a 15-litre spark-type natural gas engine .

The 15-litre engine requires LNG gas and SCR systems. All Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks equipped with 15-litre engines use Westport high-pressure fuel systems, including LNG tanks, cryogenic pumps and high-pressure compressed air cylinders to allow natural gas to enter the engine body and pre- Spraying a small amount of diesel ignites, diesel requires an SCR system, which further increases the cost of a 15 litre truck.

Westport did not admit to abandoning the 15-litre truck engine. However, in early 2013, Westport once mentioned that only three HPDI engines were sold in the first quarter.

Westport CEO Demers said: "The 15 liters is to prove that natural gas can be used on trucks. Let more and more people know that LNG itself is a great success, but we have never said that this is our last in the market A product, or this product can meet everyone's needs." Demers expects to have more OEM products that match the use of natural gas in the future.

However, a person in the truck industry revealed that the absence of a statement from Westport may indicate that Westport is reconsidering this matter and may continue to produce 15 liters of natural gas engines.
