Researchers at UC Irvine invented nanowire battery materials that can be recharged thousands of times, further from the study of permanently used batteries that do not need to be replaced.
This breakthrough study may significantly extend the useful life of computers, smartphones, home appliances, cars and spacecraft.
Scientists are always looking for nanowires in batteries. Thousands of times thinner than human hair, they have high electrical conductivity, large surface area storage and good transmission characteristics. However, these filaments are very fragile and do not retain good repetitive discharges and charges or cycles. In a typical lithium-ion battery, they expand and grow brittle and fragile, which can easily lead to cracking.
UCI researchers have addressed this issue by coating gold nanowires with manganese dioxide and surrounding the components with vitrified gel electrolytes. The combination is reliable and defeats failure.
Lead researcher, UCI's Dr. Mya Le Thai, tested the electrodes 200,000 times more than three months without any capacity or power loss and did not crack any nanowires. The study was published in the United States Chemical Society of Energy Letters.
Senior author said that this success depends on hard work plus luck. "Mya was discovered while playing, she was coated with a thin layer of gel throughout her inner layer and began to cycle," says the author of the UCI chemistry department. "She found that by using this gel, it can be recycled thousands of times without losing any ability."
"The results are very surprising," he added, usually after these things 5000 or 6000 or 6000 will die. "
Researchers staff, by adding metal oxide to the battery, can increase its flexibility to prevent cracking.
"The coated electrode can maintain a better shape, making it a more reliable choice," Mya said. "This study demonstrates that nanowire battery electrodes have a long life and we can implement these types of batteries."
