Because the absorption spectrum of ions and molecules in the quantum-limited superfluid state is in the terahertz range, terahertz light can be used as a tool to achieve non-contact detection of biological signals.
THz waves (terahertz waves) were formally named from the mid-to-late 1980s, before which scientists would collectively refer to them as far-infrared rays. A terahertz wave is an electromagnetic wave with a frequency in the range of 0.1 THz to 10 THz, with a wavelength in the range of 0.03 to 3 mm, between microwave and infrared.
