According to Doha, Norway’s “Upstream Online†report, Qatar’s oil minister Abdullah Hamad Al-Attiya stated on March 30 that despite the global economic downturn, due to some Asian countries including India or China, European countries demand new supplies of natural gas. Therefore, Qatar believes that the global demand for natural gas will increase further.
Attiya made the above remarks to Reuters reporters during an energy conference held in Kuwait. He said that the world will face a serious shortage of natural gas.
Altria said: "So far, I have received requests from India, China, Germany and many other countries in the world to increase the supply of natural gas, and the demand for natural gas is currently very high."
Athia added that no existing consumers demand to reduce their natural gas supply.
Athiya said that Qatar hopes to supply 1 million tons of natural gas to Thailand from 2011. The volume of natural gas exported to India this year will increase by 2.5 million tons to 7.5 million tons.
Athiya added that Qatar and India are currently discussing the addition of 1 million tons of natural gas to India’s planned terminal in Kochin, southern India. However, Atia did not provide more detailed information.
Altia added that China, which has received 5 million tons of natural gas annually from Qatar, has also asked for new supplies.
Athiya also said that Qatar hopes to end negotiations with Kuwait at a certain time this year on natural gas supply issues. Kuwait needs more natural gas to meet the increasing demand for air-conditioning units during the summer.
